Preparing for fireworks with an anxious dog

As Halloween and Firework night approach, it is more than likely that there will be fireworks going off almost every night! Here at Four Legged Friends Petcare, we know that it can be difficult to ensure that your anxious dog is comfortable around this time. We have put together some helpful tips for helping your furry friend to feel more content so you can both enjoy your evening, stress free.

Create a cosy space for your dog

It is important that your dog has a quiet, comfortable and cosy environment that they can access by themselves if they need to, while fireworks are going off. By providing a safe space for your dog, you can put them in control of where they want to be during this scary time. If your dog has a crate, fill it with cosy cushions and their favourite toys to make it seem like an inviting, safe place for them to go. It is also recommended that you put a blanket over the top of the crate as this helps to block out noise.

Take your dog out for a walk during the day

Taking your dog out for a walk during the daylight helps them to burn off some energy early in the day. This may help to naturally calm them down which will mean they will typically be calmer before the fireworks begin.

Purchase a calm diffuser for your home

Calm diffusers are a great tool to help reduce your dog’s anxiety at any time, but especially when firework displays are happening every night! Simply purchase one, plug it in and it will release pheromones to help calm your dog. It is recommended that you plug in your diffuser a minimum of 24hours before it is expected that you will need to use it to help your dog. For big events such as firework night, it is recommended that you plug in your diffuser 2-3 days in advance to help ensure the pheromones are circulating well enough to be fully effective.

Close all curtains or blinds

Closing your curtains or blinds is an effective way to muffle some of the sound of the fireworks. This also blocks out lights and flashes which may be contributing to your dog’s fear of fireworks.

Purchase an anxiety coat for your dog

Anxiety coats are a great product to help relieve your dog’s stress around fireworks. These were created to give comfort to your pet in a similar way you would swaddle a baby to comfort it. It’s just like permanently giving them a big hug!

Play some soothing music

Playing some calming music is a great way of ‘drowning out’ the loud sounds of fireworks. There are plenty of doggie playlists on YouTube and other music streaming platforms but it could be fun to create your own playlist!

Provide lots of cuddles!

To your dog, you are the best thing in the world! They will usually seek comfort from you so don’t be afraid to give them cuddles and affection.

There are plenty of remedies that can help to prepare your dog for fireworks. It is important that you conduct research into which ones work the best for your dog as a remedy that works for one dog, may not work for another!
